Chapter 9
The Return
Sofia descends from the balcony, walks through the restored city, and heads home along the newly exposed path. She reunites with her mother on the shore, and together they watch the sun rise over Aegira.
Sofia stood on the balcony, the warm breeze brushing her face. Below, the city of Aegira stretched out like a jewel in the morning light. The streets, still damp from their long sleep, gleamed under the rising sun. Coral clung to the rooftops in shades of pink and gold, and the air carried the scent of salt and blooming flowers.
She looked down at her hands. The five shards in her pocket hummed softly, a quiet song of comfort. She thought of the sixth, still embedded in the pedestal far below. But it belonged here now, part of the Heartstone's new home.
Sofia took a deep breath and stepped back through the carved doorway. The staircase she had climbed earlier spiraled down into the heart of the city. She followed it, her footsteps echoing on the stone. The walls were alive with tiny glowing creatures that pulsed in rhythm with her heartbeat.
