The rustle of dry leaves was a symphony of dread to Whisper. Each crackle, each whisper of wind through the skeletal branches, sent a shiver down her spine. She pressed herself deeper into the hollow beneath the gnarled roots of an ancient oak, her heart thrumming a frantic, desperate rhythm against her ribs. The scent of damp earth and decaying wood was a familiar comfort, a fragile shield against the gnawing fear that had become her constant companion.

Just moments ago, she had been venturing out, a tiny, twitching nose testing the air for the faintest hint of clover, a fragile hope for sustenance. But then she had heard the sharp, guttural bark, the frenzied scrabbling of claws on bark, and the terrified squeaks of a smaller creature. Flicker. The name itself tasted like ash in her mouth. She had seen him then, a blur of russet fur and glinting teeth, cornering a young squirrel near the edge of the thinning pines. The squirrel, no bigger than her own paw, had chattered in terror, its tiny claws scrabbling uselessly at the smooth bark of a tree Flicker had already claimed.

Whisper had frozen, every instinct screaming at her to flee, yet her paws remained rooted to the spot. She watched, a silent, trembling witness, as Flicker, with a cruel, almost casual flick of his jaw, silenced the squirrel’s cries. He didn't even seem to eat it, not right away. He simply held it, a trophy, a display of his dominance, before tossing it aside with a dismissive growl. The act, the sheer casual brutality of it, had etched itself into Whisper’s memory, a stark reminder of the predator’s unyielding hunger and the prey’s utter helplessness.
