The scent of jasmine, sweet and cloying, hung heavy in the evening air, a stark contrast to the acrid tang of gunpowder and stale sweat that had been Elias’s constant companion for seven years. He breathed it in, deep and slow, letting it fill his lungs like a balm. Beside him, Seraphina’s hand rested lightly on his arm, her fingers tracing the faint scar that snaked just below his elbow, a relic of a training exercise he’d long since buried.

“You’re quiet tonight, Elias,” she murmured, her voice a soft melody against the chirping of crickets. “Lost in thought?”

He turned to her, his gaze softening. Seraphina. The anchor in the storm that had threatened to swallow him whole. Her eyes, the color of warm honey, held a kindness that had disarmed him from the moment they met.
