Chapter 6
A Different Dawn
Elias returns to his hometown, adopting a new name. He attempts to navigate civilian life, haunted by memories. He meets Seraphina, a beacon of normalcy and warmth, and begins to build a new life.
The bus hissed to a stop, a sigh of weary relief escaping Elias as the air outside rushed in, carrying with it the scent of pine and damp earth. Seven years. Seven years of dust and blood and the gnawing emptiness of a life lived in the shadows. He stepped onto the cracked asphalt of the bus station, his new name, “Ethan Hayes,” a fragile shield against the phantom weight of his past. The small town of Oakhaven unfolded before him, a picture of quiet gentility he’d only dared to dream of during the long, brutal nights. It was everything he had yearned for, a stark contrast to the sterile efficiency of Shadow Dragon barracks and the desolate landscapes of his missions.

The bakery on Elm Street, where he’d once bought a celebratory pastry after a particularly grueling exam, still exuded the sweet aroma of sugar and yeast. Mrs. Gable’s flower shop, a riot of color and fragrance, brought a pang of something akin to homesickness. He’d been so young when he left, so eager to prove himself, so utterly oblivious to the path his brother, Silas, was carving for him.
