The scent of rain-soaked earth and the distant hum of the city were Elias’s lullaby. He traced the condensation on the windowpane, his reflection a ghost against the darkening sky. Seven years. Seven years since he’d last breathed this air, felt this quietude. He’d traded the cacophony of war for the gentle rhythm of civilian life, the cold steel of a weapon for the warmth of Seraphina’s hand in his. It was a fragile peace, a carefully constructed façade, but it was his. And he would defend it with every fiber of his being.

A shadow flickered at the edge of his perception, a familiar prickle of unease that had become a constant companion. He dismissed it, a phantom limb of his past reaching out from the abyss. But the prickle intensified, a low thrumming beneath his skin that mirrored the distant thunder. He stood, his movements fluid and economical, a predator assessing its territory even in the supposed safety of his own home.

Downstairs, Seraphina’s laughter, bright and clear, cut through the growing tension. She was his anchor, his reason for fighting this internal war. He couldn’t let his past taint the future they were building, couldn’t let the ghosts of the Shadow Dragons drag him back into their suffocating darkness.
