The hum of the diner was a familiar, comforting blanket, a stark contrast to the silence that had once been his constant companion. Elias stirred his lukewarm coffee, the clinking spoon a small rebellion against the quiet that had settled over him since leaving the diner. Seraphina’s laughter, so bright and genuine, still echoed in his mind, a melody he clung to. He watched the rain streak the window, each drop a tiny, fleeting moment, much like the peace he was trying to cultivate.

A shadow fell over his table, a sudden chill that had nothing to do with the damp air. Elias’s head snapped up, his instincts flaring before his mind could even catch up. Standing before him was a man whose presence seemed to suck the warmth from the room. Commander Valerius. The name itself was a brand, seared into Elias’s memory. He hadn’t seen Valerius in seven years, not since the day Elias had walked away from the life he’d known.

Valerius’s gaze, sharp and unwavering, swept over Elias, a slow, deliberate appraisal that felt like an interrogation. There was a flicker of something in those eyes – recognition, perhaps, or was it a calculated assessment of the man Elias had become? Valerius was older, his once immaculate uniform now showing the faint wear of time, but the steely resolve in his posture remained unchanged.
