The chipped ceramic mug felt warm in Seraphina’s hands, a familiar comfort against the cool evening air that had begun to creep into their small apartment. “Everything alright, love?” Sera asked, her voice soft, laced with a gentle concern that Elias had come to rely on, even as he tried to shield her from the storm brewing within him. The question hung in the air, a fragile bridge between his guarded world and her open heart.

Elias blinked, his focus snapping back to her. He offered a fleeting smile, a shadow of the one he usually wore so effortlessly. “Just tired, Sera. Long day at the office.” The lie tasted like ash in his mouth, a familiar, bitter flavor. He traced the rim of his mug, avoiding her direct gaze. He’d become adept at evasion, at weaving a tapestry of plausible deniability, but with Sera, it felt like a betrayal of the deepest kind.
