The aroma of roasted coffee beans, a scent Elias had come to associate with a life blessedly ordinary, swirled around him. It was a stark contrast to the metallic tang of blood and the acrid smoke that had once been the perfume of his days. He traced the rim of his mug, the ceramic cool beneath his fingertips, a small anchor in the swirling currents of his thoughts. Across the small cafe table, Seraphina’s laughter, bright and unburdened, was a melody he cherished. She spoke of her day, of a particularly stubborn rose bush in her garden, her eyes sparkling with an innocent joy that made his chest ache with a tenderness he’d never known before.

He listened, offering a nod, a murmured reply, his mind a battlefield. The subtle unease that had settled over him like a shroud since the anonymous note had begun to tighten its grip. “The price of secrecy,” the message had read, a chillingly familiar phrase. It was a language he understood, a dialect spoken in hushed tones behind closed doors, a whisper from a world he’d fought so hard to leave behind.

“Elias? You’re miles away,” Sera said, her brow furrowing slightly. She reached across the table, her hand covering his. Her touch was warm, grounding, a gentle reminder of the life he was fighting to protect. “Everything alright?”
