The air in the Ashton manor still hung heavy with the scent of lilies and grief, a cloying perfume that did little to mask the undercurrent of unease. Detective Alistair Finch, his gaze sweeping over the opulent drawing-room, felt it like a physical weight. The official verdict of accidental suffocation, a tragic mishap with an overly elaborate ballgown, had been delivered with a swiftness that pricked at his professional instincts. Accidents, in his experience, rarely left behind such a neat, tidy conclusion.

He’d spent the morning poring over the scant evidence, the silk of Elizabeth’s gown, the heavy velvet of her dressing room drapes, the ornate mirror that had reflected her final, unwitting moments. His attention, however, kept drifting to the staff, a silent, unseen chorus in the drama that had unfolded. They moved through the grand halls like ghosts, their faces etched with a practiced neutrality. Among them, one maid, Zoe, had caught his eye. She was a creature of shadows and quiet efficiency, her movements economical, her gaze unnervingly steady. While others wrung their hands or offered platitudes, Zoe simply… watched.
