Chapter 5
A Network of Deceit
Finch delves into Elizabeth's life. He uncovers whispers of a stolen inheritance, a shadowed past, and individuals whose motives are far from pure. Secrets begin to unravel.
Detective Alistair Finch stood in the opulent, yet eerily silent, chambers of the late Elizabeth Ashton. The air still hung heavy with the cloying scent of lilies and the fainter, more disturbing aroma of expensive perfume, a stark contrast to the grim reality that had unfolded here. The official verdict had been swift, almost too swift: a tragic accident, a moment of unfortunate asphyxiation caused by the very gown intended to make her the belle of the ball. But Finch, a man who had seen enough of the world’s carefully constructed facades to recognize the subtle cracks, was not convinced. He ran a gloved finger along the deep crimson velvet of the armchair, the fabric cool beneath his touch. It was too clean, too undisturbed.
He had arrived at Ashton Manor a full day after the discovery of Elizabeth’s body, summoned by a discreetly worded letter from a concerned relative who wished to remain anonymous. The initial report, filed by the local constabulary, was a masterpiece of bureaucratic brevity, detailing the deceased, the cause, and the immediate conclusion. Finch had reread it thrice, each perusal deepening his unease. Accidents, in his experience, rarely left such a neat, tidy narrative.
His gaze swept across the room, taking in the details that the hurried preliminary investigation might have overlooked. A vanity table, cluttered with an array of silver-backed brushes, ornate perfume bottles, and half-used pots of rouge, spoke of a young woman preparing for a night of revelry. A delicate lace handkerchief lay folded beside a pearl-inlaid comb. Nothing seemed out of place, yet everything felt wrong. The meticulous arrangement of the room, almost too perfect, suggested a staged scene, a performance of innocence.
