The opulent ballroom, once a vibrant tableau of swirling silks and gleaming jewels, now felt like a mausoleum. Detective Alistair Finch stood near the grand staircase, the echoes of laughter and music a cruel counterpoint to the somber reality that had descended upon Ashton Manor. Elizabeth Ashton, barely past her nineteenth birthday, lay dead in her chambers, her final moments spent in a suffocating embrace with the very gown meant to adorn her for this very celebration. The official verdict, delivered with a dismissive wave of the hand by the local constabulary, was a tragic accident. A faulty clasp, a moment of panic, a misplaced breath. Simple. Tragic. And utterly, infuriatingly wrong.

Finch had seen too many “accidents” in his career that reeked of careful planning. The subtle, almost imperceptible tremor in the hand of the physician who had pronounced her dead, the overly eager pronouncements of the constabulary – these were not the signs of a grieving household or a routine investigation. To the faint disarray of her dressing table, the way a single, delicate pearl had rolled beneath the heavy velvet curtains, as if nudged by a hurried hand. And then there was the locket. Hidden, not worn, tucked beneath a loose floorboard near her wardrobe. It was a small, silver heart, intricately engraved, and inside, two miniature portraits. One, undeniably Elizabeth. The other, a woman Finch didn't immediately recognize, her features stern yet tinged with a familiar sadness.
