Chapter 11
The Inheritance Trail
Finch follows the money. The trail of the stolen Ashton inheritance leads him through a labyrinth of shady dealings, implicating those closest to the family and revealing a motive for murder.
Detective Alistair Finch found himself wading through ledgers that smelled of dust and desperation. The Ashton family’s financial records, once meticulously kept, now resembled a battlefield of scribbled entries and hastily torn pages. Elizabeth’s father, a man whose portrait now stared down from the library wall with a perpetually worried frown, had evidently been less than forthcoming about the family’s true wealth. Or perhaps, Finch mused, the truth had been deliberately obscured.
He’d been drawn into the Ashton estate by a sense of unease, a nagging feeling that the official verdict of ‘tragic accident’ for Elizabeth Ashton’s demise was as flimsy as a cobweb in a gale. The suffocating embrace of her own gown, a cascade of emerald silk and intricate lace, had been deemed the culprit. A fashionable, albeit macabre, end. But the cryptic note, clutched in Elizabeth’s lifeless hand, and the hidden locket containing a miniature portrait of a stern-faced man Finch didn't recognize, whispered a different story. A story of secrets, and perhaps, of murder.
The inheritance. It was always about the inheritance. Finch had learned that much about the noble houses of this realm. Fortunes were built, marriages arranged, and lives extinguished all in the pursuit of wealth and power. He’d spent the last few days sifting through the remnants of the Ashton fortune, a task made more challenging by the apparent disarray of their finances. Yet, beneath the surface chaos, a pattern began to emerge. A series of transactions, dating back several years, that seemed to drain the Ashton coffers with an almost surgical precision.
