The air in Elizabeth’s chambers, once thick with the cloying sweetness of wilting roses and the phantom scent of her departed perfume, now held only the sterile, cold fragrance of disinfectant. Detective Alistair Finch moved through the room with a practiced, almost mournful stillness. It had been three days since the ball, three days since the gilded cage had become Elizabeth Ashton’s tomb. The official verdict, delivered with a shrug and a sigh of practiced sympathy by the local constabulary, was a tragic accident. A moment of carelessness, a gown too elaborate, a breath too deep, and the vibrant young lady was no more. Finch, however, felt the prickle of unease, a familiar sensation that clung to him like the damp chill of a crypt.

He ran a gloved finger along the smooth, polished surface of Elizabeth’s vanity. Not a speck of dust. Impeccable, just as the maids had claimed. He’d interviewed them, of course. Lola, with her quick wit and sharper tongue, had offered a torrent of platitudes and feigned grief, her eyes darting about the room as if searching for an escape route. Zoe, quieter, more observant, had been a study in stoic composure, her replies clipped and precise, her gaze never quite meeting his. He’d found them both unnerving in their own ways, but it was the pervasive stillness of the room that truly unsettled him. No signs of a struggle, no overturned furniture, nothing to suggest a violent end. Yet, the knot in his gut tightened.

His gaze fell upon the velvet-lined jewelry box, its lid slightly ajar. The constabulary had cataloged its contents, deeming them all accounted for. But Finch had a habit of looking beyond the obvious, of seeking the story whispered by the overlooked. He opened the box fully, the faint click echoing in the silence. Rings, necklaces, bracelets – a dazzling array of wealth and status. And then he saw it. Tucked beneath a string of pearls, almost hidden, was a locket. It was an unassuming piece, crafted from tarnished silver, its surface devoid of the intricate engraving that adorned Elizabeth’s other jewels. It seemed out of place, too simple for the lavish tastes of the Ashton heiress.
