The silence that descended after the Stardust Serenade’s frantic ascent was almost as deafening as the chaotic symphony of its departure. Barry stood on the dew-kissed grass of Farmer McGregor’s back forty, the faint scent of ozone and regret clinging to the air. He blinked, his eyes still adjusting to the mundane reality after the dazzling, bewildering spectacle of Gay’s escape. His glow-in-the-dark socks, a parting gift that now felt like a mocking reminder of his brief, intergalactic sojourn, pulsed softly against the pre-dawn gloom.

He sighed, a sound that seemed to carry the weight of a thousand spreadsheets and a single, improbable alien friendship. Zorp, the stern, obsidian-suited enforcer of galactic law, had vanished as swiftly as he had arrived, leaving behind only a lingering chill and Barry’s suddenly very interesting laundry. He patted his pockets, half-expecting to find a stray piece of iridescent alien technology, but found only his wallet, a crumpled tissue, and a faint sheen of something that glittered when he tilted it just so.

He looked up at the sky, where Gay’s ship had disappeared into the inky canvas. Was that it? Was it truly over? The thought was a strange mix of relief and… a hollow ache. He’d expected to be terrified, to be traumatized, but instead, he felt a peculiar sense of loss. He’d been on the verge of explaining the nuances of depreciation, of the subtle art of tax loophole discovery. He’d almost convinced Gay that beige wasn’t inherently evil, merely misunderstood.
