Lady Seraphina surveyed the opulent sprawl of her solar-palace from her perch on a velvet chaise. Sunlight, filtered through stained-glass depictions of heroic felines conquering lesser beings, dappled the polished obsidian floor. The air, thick with the scent of jasmine and the faint, metallic tang of subservient dog sweat, usually soothed her. Today, it felt cloying, a suffocating blanket woven from her own anxieties. A tremor, subtle but insistent, had rippled through the usual placid currents of Catdromeda, and it emanated, she suspected, from the most unlikely of sources: a scrawny, ambitious house-servant named Whiskers.

Her mind, usually a finely tuned instrument for assessing threats and opportunities, felt sluggish, clouded by a disquiet she couldn't quite name. Whiskers. The very thought of him, a creature whose existence was defined by polishing silver and fetching warmed cream, now stirred a prickle of unease along her spine. He had been asking questions, she’d heard through the meticulously curated whispers of her staff. Questions about the old texts, about the forgotten histories, about… things that were not the concern of a servant.

A soft, rhythmic thudding announced the arrival of Commander Rex, his massive frame filling the doorway. He bowed his head, a gesture of practiced deference that never quite masked the coiled power beneath. His eyes, the color of molten amber, met hers, devoid of any discernible emotion, a testament to his iron discipline.
