Chapter 6
The First Trial
Whiskers’ quest leads him to a dangerous district controlled by a ruthless feline faction. He must use his wits to evade capture and prove his determination.
The air in the Shadow Paws district hung thick and cloying, a miasma of stale fish, desperation, and the ever-present scent of fear. It was a far cry from the perfumed halls of Lady Seraphina’s estate, a place Whiskers had only known through the hushed whispers of the other servants. Here, the opulent silks and polished obsidian were replaced by crumbling brick, rust-eaten metal, and the skeletal remains of forgotten industries. Even the starlight seemed to dim, as if unwilling to pierce the gloom of this forgotten corner of Catdromeda.
Whiskers flattened himself against a grimy wall, his heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against his ribs. His ambition, once a bright, burning ember, felt fragile now, easily extinguished by the harsh realities of this place.
He clutched the tattered fragment of parchment tighter, its cryptic markings the only clue in his desperate search for the truth behind the prophecy. Barnaby, the old dog, had pressed it into his paw with a solemn urgency, his rheumy eyes conveying a weight of knowledge that both terrified and compelled Whiskers. "The First Trial," Barnaby had rasped, his voice a gravelly whisper, "lies where the shadows are deepest and the claws are sharpest. Prove your mettle, young one, or the galaxy remains chained."
