Chapter 5
Whispers in the Alleyways
Seeking allies, Whiskers ventures into the underbelly of Catdromeda. He encounters Barnaby, an old dog with cryptic knowledge of the past and the prophecy.
The scent of stale fish and desperation hung heavy in the alleyways, a stark contrast to the perfumed opulence Whiskers had known his entire life. Here, beneath the glittering spires of Catdromeda, where the celestial nectar flowed freely in the upper echelons, life was a grimy, claw-scrubbing affair. Whiskers, his sleek black fur still bearing the faint sheen of his former master’s grooming oils, flattened himself against a damp brick wall, his emerald eyes darting nervously. He was a fugitive now, a smudge on the pristine tapestry of feline society, and the cold dread of Commander Rex’s hounds was a constant companion.
His quest for answers had led him down here, away from the watchful eyes of the feline aristocracy and their ever-present canine enforcers. The prophecy, a whisper in the dusty archives, spoke of a power that could reshape their galaxy, a power he was desperate to understand. But knowledge, he was quickly learning, wasn't found in gilded libraries or whispered by pampered nobles. It festered in the shadows, guarded by those who had little to lose and everything to gain.
A low growl rumbled from the mouth of the alley, a sound that sent a shiver down Whiskers’ spine. He tensed, ready to spring, his claws instinctively extending. But the growl wasn't predatory; it was a weary, almost mournful sound. From the gloom emerged a figure, stooped and grizzled, a canine of immense size but clearly past his prime. His fur was the colour of old parchment, matted and scarred, and his eyes, though clouded with age, held a surprising depth of intelligence. This was Barnaby, a name whispered with a mixture of reverence and fear among the alley cats, a creature of myth and rumour.
