The scent of stale kibble and desperation clung to the lower sectors of Catdromeda like a persistent flea. Here, beneath the shimmering spires where feline nobles preened and purred, lived the vast majority of the galaxy's canine population. Whiskers, his fur still bearing the faint sheen of Lady Seraphina’s silk-scented grooming oils from his latest, most humiliating errand, navigated the labyrinthine alleys with a practiced stealth that belied his noble aspirations. He wasn't supposed to be here, not really. His duties were meant to keep him within the gilded confines of feline society, a mere extension of their pampered whims. But the prophecy, that tantalizing whisper of a power that could reshape their world, had taken root in his ambitious heart, and it pulled him towards the overlooked, the downtrodden, the very dogs he was trained to serve.
He found them huddled in the dim glow of sputtering fusion lamps, their massive forms hunched, their usually bright eyes clouded with weariness. A group of grizzled mastiffs, their muzzles flecked with gray, were sharing hushed complaints. Their words, a guttural rumble of discontent, spoke of unfair rations, impossible workloads, and the casual cruelty of their feline masters.
“Another crate of sun-gems for Lady Seraphina’s new chaise lounge,” grumbled a particularly burly bulldog named Brutus, his jowls quivering with suppressed anger. “While we’re expected to subsist on scraps and yesterday’s gruel.”
