The village, once a vibrant tapestry of shared laughter and familiar faces, now felt like a cage. Laiyla moved through its streets with a practiced grace, her smile a carefully constructed mask. Her betrothal to Tariq, a man of good standing and comfortable means, was a foregone conclusion, a decree from her father that echoed the village elders’ pronouncements. Yet, with every silk thread woven into her wedding trousseau, with every polite conversation about dowry and ceremony, a silent scream built within her. Her heart, however, belonged to the wild, untamed poet who had vanished as suddenly as he had appeared in her life.

She remembered the sting of his absence like a physical wound. The day Tariq’s veiled congratulations had sliced through the air, followed by the chilling silence where Majnun’s voice should have been, had been the beginning of her own exile. The olive groves, once their sanctuary, now held only the ghosts of his whispered promises. She would steal glances at their branches, imagining his silhouette against the setting sun, his eyes alight with the fire of his devotion. Each memory was a bittersweet ache, a reminder of the love that had been stolen, or perhaps, she admitted with a tremor, had been allowed to be stolen.

Her days were a monotonous rhythm of domestic duties and forced pleasantries. Tariq was not cruel, not in the way one might expect a villain to be. He was kind, attentive even, showering her with gifts and assurances of a comfortable future. He saw her as a beautiful prize, a fitting companion for his respectable life. And Laiyla, in her quiet desperation, found herself playing the part of the dutiful bride-to-be, her spirit slowly being leached away by the suffocating expectations. But beneath the compliant surface, a fierce ember of defiance glowed, fueled by the memory of Majnun’s gaze, by the echo of his poetry in her soul.
