The soft hum of the *Odyssey’s* engines was usually a comforting lullaby, a testament to Anya’s masterful piloting and the vessel’s robust engineering. But as we drifted in the eerie, phosphorescent glow of the sunken city, that hum felt like a held breath, a prelude to something vast and unsettling. The city, Howell’s, spread out before us like a forgotten dream, its spires and domes catching the scant light in a way that suggested both majesty and decay. We had found it, against all odds, a testament to my relentless pursuit and Anya’s unwavering skill. Yet, as I stared at the silent structures, a cold dread began to coil in my gut, a feeling that transcended mere discovery.
“It’s… more than I imagined,” I murmured, my voice barely a whisper in the confines of the bridge. Anya, her gaze fixed on the sonar readings that painted the city’s contours, offered a noncommittal grunt. Her usual stoicism, a shield against the unknown, seemed to be cracking, her brow furrowed with a tension I hadn’t seen before.
“The readings are stable, Erasmus,” she said, her voice tight. “No immediate threats detected. But… there’s an energy signature. Something… ancient. It’s unlike anything I’ve ever encountered.”
