The silence that descended upon Howell’s was not the peaceful quiet of an abandoned place, but the heavy, expectant hush of a held breath. We had breached its outer defenses, navigated the treacherous currents that guarded its secrets, and now, we were here. The city. Or what remained of it. Towers of coral like skeletal fingers clawed at the perpetual twilight of the deep, their once-proud architecture softened by centuries of oceanic embrace. Luminescent flora pulsed with an ethereal glow, casting shifting patterns on the seabed, illuminating what looked like plazas and thoroughfares, now choked with silt and the skeletal remains of marine life. It was breathtaking, a testament to a civilization lost to the abyss, and for a moment, the gnawing anxieties that had accompanied our journey receded, replaced by a profound sense of awe.

“Remarkable,” Captain Sharma’s voice, usually so steady, held a tremor of wonder. “Truly remarkable.”

I gripped the controls of the *Nautilus*, my eyes scanning the readings on the console. Pressure stable, oxygen levels nominal, hull integrity holding. Yet, a prickle of unease began to crawl up my spine, a sensation that had become all too familiar since we’d embarked on this quest. The city felt… watched.
