The pressure gauge on the submersible’s console, a constant, unnerving companion these past few days, finally dipped into the sweet spot between ‘improbable’ and ‘impossible.’ Anya’s knuckles, white against the controls, finally relaxed a fraction. My own breath hitched, a dry, rasping sound in the recycled air. We had chased whispers, deciphered riddles etched onto brittle parchment, and navigated treacherous currents that seemed to actively resist our passage. And now, through the reinforced viewport, a spectacle unfolded that defied every rational explanation.

It wasn't a ruin. That’s what struck me first, a cold, sharp observation cutting through the rising tide of awe. Cities, when they sink, when they succumb to the crushing embrace of the abyss, degrade. They crumble, they erode, they become skeletal remains picked clean by time and the relentless sea. But Howell’s… Howell’s was pristine. It lay nestled in a vast, impossibly deep trench, bathed in an ethereal, phosphorescent glow that emanated not from external sources, but from the very fabric of the city itself. Buildings, impossibly slender and graceful, spiralled towards the unseen surface, their surfaces shimmering with an inner luminescence. Domes of what appeared to be solidified light pulsed with a gentle rhythm, like the slow, steady heartbeat of a slumbering titan.

“By the stars,” Anya breathed, her voice barely a whisper, laced with a reverence I hadn’t heard from her before. Pragmatic Anya, who treated every mechanical fault and navigational anomaly with a detached professionalism, was visibly shaken.
