As they near the supposed location, the submersible experiences inexplicable power surges and communication blackouts. Anya grows increasingly concerned, her stoic demeanor showing cracks.

The descent was a symphony of groaning metal and the muffled thrum of the submersible’s engines, a sound that had become the constant, unnerving pulse of our journey. Outside, the ocean deepened, its blues bleeding into an inky, impenetrable black. Sunlight was a distant memory, replaced by the eerie, spectral glow of our external lights, which painted fleeting, distorted landscapes on the abyssal plains. We were nearing Howell’s, or at least, the coordinates the map had so tantalizingly gifted us.

“Approaching designated zone, Erasmus,” Anya’s voice, usually a steady anchor in the chaotic depths, held a subtle tremor. She was hunched over the controls, her brow furrowed in concentration, her eyes darting between the sonar and the blinking array of instruments. Even her practiced stoicism seemed to be fraying at the edges, a sure sign that something was amiss.

“Any anomalies on the sonar, Captain?” I asked, my own gaze fixed on the main viewer, where nothing but endless darkness greeted us. The map, a fragile parchment that had once seemed like a fanciful relic, now felt like a key to a door I was increasingly hesitant to open.
