The air in the mess hall, usually thick with the scent of stale coffee and the low murmur of shared anxieties, had taken on a new, almost glacial chill. It was the kind of silence that presses in, heavy and expectant, the kind that settles when an unwelcome guest walks through the door. And Dr. Elias Thorne, with his impossibly neat silver hair and eyes that seemed to dissect everything they landed on, was precisely that.
He’d arrived, of course, under the guise of an eleventh-hour addition, a “necessary collaboration” as Captain Sharma had stiffly explained it, her voice betraying a tension I hadn’t heard before. Thorne, a name synonymous with ambitious archaeology and a penchant for cutting corners, was a rival I’d sparred with in academic circles for years. He was all polished pronouncements and smarmy smiles, a man who saw discovery not as a pursuit, but as a conquest. And now, he was here, on my vessel, ostensibly to lend his “unparalleled expertise” to the search for Howell’s.
I watched him as he accepted a mug of tea, his movements economical, almost predatory. He spoke to Sharma with a respectful deference that felt entirely rehearsed. “Captain, it is an honor to be entrusted with such a monumental undertaking. Professor Erasmus’s… tenacity in pursuing this legend is, as always, remarkable.” The slight pause before my name, the subtle emphasis, was a brushstroke of his usual condescension.
