The decompression chamber hissed, a sound that normally signified the end of a perilous dive, a return to the familiar embrace of air and light. But this time, the hiss felt less like a release and more like a sigh of exhaustion. We were back on the *Triton*, bobbing on the indifferent surface of the ocean, the sun a blinding, almost accusatory presence after the perpetual twilight of Howell’s. The immediate terror, the crushing weight of the city’s final, desperate pulse, had receded, leaving behind a hollow ache, a phantom limb of dread.

Captain Sharma, ever the picture of professional composure, oversaw the disembarkation with practiced efficiency. But even her movements seemed a fraction slower, her gaze lingering on the churning water as if expecting something to breach its placid surface. Thorne, predictably, was already preening, his expensive diving suit meticulously wiped down, a faint, smug smile playing on his lips. I, on the other hand, felt like a raw nerve.
