The ascent was a blur of churning water and the groaning protest of the submersible’s hull. Above us, the abyss churned, a hungry maw ready to swallow us back into its indifferent embrace. I pressed my face against the viewport, my breath fogging the glass. The intricate carvings, the soaring arches, the ghostly outlines of plazas and avenues – it was all dissolving, not into ruin, but into a more primal state. The light, which had been a pale, ethereal glow emanating from within the city itself, began to dim, then flicker, like a dying ember. The Guardian’s presence, which had been a palpable pressure, a silent, watchful sentinel throughout our brief, terrifying exploration, was receding. It was like watching a magnificent, ancient beast slowly sink beneath the waves, its final gaze fixed upon us, a gaze that held no malice, only an immense and ancient sorrow.
