The cavernous maw of Howell's City seemed to exhale a final, mournful sigh as we turned our backs on its suffocating grandeur. Thorne, a pathetic heap of defeated ambition, was secured, his fury a silent testament to his lost cause. The Guardian’s presence, no longer a palpable threat but a lingering resonance, pressed in on us, a reminder of the immense power we had skirted. Anya’s hand, surprisingly steady, gripped my arm. “We have to go, Erasmus. Now.” Her voice, usually a calm anchor, was laced with a tremor I hadn’t heard before.

The submersible, ‘The Nautilus,’ felt impossibly small and fragile against the colossal ruins. As we maneuvered it out of the city’s main thoroughfare, a strange current seemed to snag us. Not a natural ebb and flow of the ocean, but something more deliberate, more insistent. The lights within the submersible flickered, casting dancing shadows that distorted the already alien architecture of Howell's. “What was that?” I asked, my voice a low murmur, the question hanging unanswered in the tense air.

Anya’s eyes, usually sharp and focused, darted around the control panel. “Just… unusual currents. The city’s energy output is still fluctuating. It’s to be expected.” But her knuckles were white where she gripped the controls, and a muscle in her jaw twitched. I knew her well enough to recognize the signs of a suppressed panic. The Guardian’s warning, the cryptic message about the city’s true purpose, had clearly shaken her more than she let on. And Thorne’s defeat, while a victory, had left a vacuum, a sense of the unknown amplified.
