The humid air hung thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket that pressed down on Anya’s lungs. Each breath was a conscious effort, a battle against the cloying scent of damp earth and something else, something musky and unsettlingly primal. The canopy overhead was a dense, emerald ceiling, pierced only by fractured shafts of sunlight that dappled the jungle floor in shifting patterns of light and shadow. The sounds of the jungle were a symphony of the unknown – the chirping of insects like a million tiny needles, the rustle of unseen creatures in the undergrowth, the distant, mournful cry of some avian unknown. It was a world alive, teeming, and utterly alien.
“Anything, Liam?” Zara’s voice, usually a beacon of calm authority, was laced with a weary tension. She knelt beside a patch of disturbed earth, her geologist’s eye scanning for clues.
Liam, his brow furrowed in concentration, shook his head. “Nothing that makes sense. The tracks… they’re unlike anything I’ve ever documented. Too large for any known compsognathodae, and the stride… it’s too deliberate, too powerful.” He ran a gloved hand over a deep gouge in the soil, his expression a mixture of awe and apprehension
