The snap of a twig, sharp and alien in the otherwise hushed symphony of the forest, sent a jolt through Ben. He froze, his hand instinctively going to the worn grip of the heavy flashlight he carried, more for reassurance than illumination at this hour. Beside him, Alex was already a statue, her gaze, usually darting and analytical, now fixed on a point beyond the dense curtain of ancient pines. The air, thick with the scent of damp earth and decaying leaves, suddenly felt charged with a different kind of energy – one that prickled the skin and tightened the chest.
"Did you hear that?" Ben whispered, his voice barely a breath.
Alex nodded, her eyes narrowed. "Too deliberate to be an animal. And too close."
