The air hung thick and still, a humid blanket that clung to Alex and Ben’s skin as they pushed deeper into the ancient woods. Sunlight, fractured by the dense canopy, dappled the forest floor in shifting patterns of gold and shadow. They’d been following the crude markings on the map for days, each step a testament to their relentless pursuit of the story. The fragmented relics and inscriptions they’d unearthed spoke of a people lost to time, a civilization whose whispers still resonated in the very earth beneath their boots. But the recent signs of human activity, the carelessly discarded cigarette butts and the unnaturally snapped branches, had cast a chilling pall over their discoveries. They weren’t alone.
“Anything?” Ben’s voice was a low rumble, breaking the silence as he scanned the dense undergrowth for any sign of a trail. His brow was furrowed, the usual easy confidence replaced by a gnawing unease.
Alex shook her head, her eyes, sharp and analytical, sweeping across the moss-covered trees. “Just more of the same. The inscription we found earlier… it’s incomplete. Like someone deliberately scratched parts away.” Her voice held a tight edge, the frustration of the unknown battling with a growing sense of dread. “And the way those branches were broken… it wasn’t animals.”
