The air in Dr. Reed’s study was thick with the scent of aged paper and something else, something faintly metallic, like ozone after a storm. Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the worn leather of ancient tomes and the intricate, faded lines of the map spread across her oak desk. Alex traced a symbol with a fingertip, a spiral that seemed to writhe with an inner life. Beside her, Ben leaned closer, his usual restless energy momentarily subdued by the weight of the moment.

"So, if I'm reading this right," Alex murmured, her voice a low hum of concentration, "this section here, the one that looked like a storm cloud to us, it's actually a depiction of… flow? Energy?"

Dr. Reed, her silver hair pulled back in a severe bun, adjusted her spectacles. Her fingers, delicate and precise, hovered over the parchment. "Not just any flow, Ms. Porter. And this," she tapped a cluster of jagged lines, "is described not as a river, but as a conduit."
