Dust motes danced in the single shaft of sunlight that pierced the gloom, illuminating the worn leather of countless volumes and the intricate carvings on her antique desk. Outside, the forest rustled, a hushed murmur against the quiet intensity within. They had arrived at Dr. Reed’s remote cottage, a sanctuary of knowledge tucked away from the prying eyes of men like Silas Vance, with a desperate plea. The humming, the faint thrumming that had begun to resonate deep within the earth, was growing stronger, more insistent. Alex felt it in her bones, a primal vibration that spoke of immense, untapped power.
"He knows," Alex said, her voice tight with urgency, as she paced the confines of the small room. "Vance. He knows what we've found. Or at least, he knows *something*. He’s escalating." She recounted the near-miss on the trail, the chilling feeling of being watched, the unnerving precision of the traps they had narrowly avoided.
Ben leaned against a towering bookshelf, his jaw set. "The detour we took to get here wasn't enough. He’s got eyes everywhere. We need to get to the source, Dr. Reed. Before he does."
