Encouraged, Christopher faced the next riddle. This one spoke of time and memory, of things lost and found. The sprite watched, its bright eyes gleaming, eager to see if Christopher could unravel its second puzzle.
The sprite's laughter, like the tinkling of tiny bells, echoed through the clearing. Christopher, his heart thrumming a hopeful rhythm against his ribs, felt a surge of confidence. He had answered the first riddle, a feat that had seemed impossible just moments before. The sprite, perched on a moss-covered stone, tilted its head, its eyes – the color of twilight – sparkling with an amusement that was both challenging and, dare he think it, a little bit pleased.
"Well done, little human," it chirped, its voice a melody of rustling leaves and babbling brooks. "You have a sharp mind, indeed. But the Whispering Woods does not give up its secrets easily. It tests those who seek them, not just with tricky words, but with the weight of things forgotten."
Christopher shifted his weight, his gaze fixed on the sprite. He had noticed the subtle shift in its demeanor, the way its playful glint softened for a fleeting instant, replaced by something akin to melancholy. It was a strange creature, this sprite, a whirlwind of mischief and an ancient weariness.
