Christopher stood before the sprite, his heart thrumming a nervous rhythm against his ribs. The sprite, perched on the gnarled root of an ancient oak, tilted its head, its eyes like polished emeralds glinting in the dappled sunlight. The air around them hummed with an expectant stillness, broken only by the rustle of leaves that seemed to hold their breath. The riddle, still hanging in the air like a cobweb spun from moonlight, was as perplexing as it was familiar. "I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. The whispers that had drawn him here, faint at first, now seemed to eddy around him, coaxing him towards an answer. They spoke of things unseen, of a world that existed just beyond the edge of perception. He thought of the shadows, too, the way they had flitted and danced, teasing his vision, revealing and concealing in equal measure. They weren't just the absence of light; they felt like fleeting thoughts, like whispers given form.
