Chapter 15
The Forgotten Lullabies
As Christopher unrolled the scrolls, he discovered they contained forgotten lullabies, ancient melodies filled with a soothing, magical power. The whispers in the woods seemed to hush in anticipation.
The heavy lid of the chest creaked open, a sigh of ancient wood protesting its disturbance. Christopher held his breath, his eyes wide with anticipation. He had faced the sprite’s riddles, navigated the shadowed paths, and earned a glimpse into the heart of the Whispering Woods. Now, the moment of revelation had arrived. He expected glittering jewels, perhaps a map to a hidden kingdom, or even a magical artifact of immense power. But what he saw was, at first, a puzzle of a different kind.
Inside the chest, nestled on a bed of faded velvet, were not treasures of gold or silver, but stacks of delicate, parchment scrolls. They were tied with brittle, silken ribbons, their edges softened by the passage of countless seasons. It wasn’t writing in the way he understood it—no words, no sentences. Instead, there were intricate, looping patterns, like the flight of a tiny bird or the unfurling of a fern.
The sprite, who had perched on the edge of the chest, tilted its head, its large eyes shimmering with an emotion Christopher couldn’t quite decipher. It was not triumph, nor was it satisfaction. There was a softness there, a flicker of something akin to longing. “These,” the sprite whispered, its voice like the rustle of dry leaves, “are not for eyes that seek riches, but for ears that seek solace.”
