The final riddle hung in the air, not as a question, but as a quiet understanding. Christopher, his heart thrumming a steady rhythm against his ribs, had answered not with clever words, but with a simple act of kindness. He had shared his own meager provisions with the sprite, a gesture that had peeled away layers of its mischievous facade like shedding bark. Now, the sprite’s eyes, once sharp and glinting with challenge, held a curious softness, a flicker of something ancient and perhaps a little lonely.

The sprite, no longer a whirl of playful energy, settled onto a moss-covered root, its form becoming less a blur and more defined against the dappled sunlight. It was smaller than Christopher had first imagined, no bigger than a robin, with wings like dew-kissed cobwebs and skin the colour of pale moonlight. Its gaze, now steady and unnervingly perceptive, rested on Christopher, searching.

"You see with your heart, boy," the sprite’s voice, no longer a quicksilver chirp but a low, musical murmur, echoed softly. "Many come seeking… things. Shiny things. Loud things. But you… you saw me. And you saw the hunger."
