Chapter 4
Unraveling the Threads
I'm consumed by the dream's cryptic words. Who lost something vital? What does this sacrifice truly mean? I search for answers, both in my waking life and the lingering echoes of my dreams.
The dream clung to me like a damp shroud, its chilling pronouncement echoing in the quiet corners of my mind. “Someone has lost something very important,” the woman’s voice, laced with an ancient sorrow, had whispered. “And even though it was you or your fault, you must choose. These children or future children. Which ones do you sacrifice?” The words were a knot in my stomach, tightening with each passing hour. My twins, Liam and Noah, were still mere flickers of possibility, tiny heartbeats I could feel fluttering against my own, yet they were already entangled in this impossible dilemma.
I found myself replaying every detail of the dream, searching for clues, for a sliver of understanding that would make sense of the bewildering pronouncement. "Someone has lost something very important." The phrase circled my thoughts, a persistent, nagging question. Who? What had been lost? Was it something tangible, like a cherished heirloom, or something more abstract, like hope, or innocence, or even a soul? And how could it possibly be *my* fault? I was just a girl, barely out of my teens, carrying two lives within me. What had I done to incur such a weighty responsibility, such a devastating choice?
