Mr. Henderson traced the worn edges of the file with a calloused thumb. The thin manila folder, deceptively light, felt as if it contained the weight of a thousand suns. Each case within its confines represented a child, a flicker of innocence extinguished too soon, a story cut short by shadows he hadn't been able to banish. He remembered the small, darting eyes of a boy whose world had been reduced to the sting of a hand and the tremble of fear. He remembered the hollow silence of a girl who had stopped speaking altogether, her voice stolen by the very people who were meant to nurture it. These memories were not ghosts that haunted his sleep, but rather, they were the fuel that ignited his resolve, the constant, burning reminder of why he did what he did.

He was a man etched by the realities of his profession, his face a roadmap of late nights and hushed conversations, of grim pronouncements and the faint, persistent echo of children’s cries. His stern demeanor, often mistaken for aloofness, was a shield, a necessary barrier against the emotional onslaught that threatened to engulf him daily. It was a referral, a whisper of concern from a neighbor, a woman named Sarah, about a young girl named Lily and her father, Mark. The initial report was sparse, a few carefully chosen words that hinted at something amiss without explicitly stating it. "Unpredictable outbursts," "child appears withdrawn," "concerned for her safety." These were the phrases that snagged his attention, the subtle tremors that signaled a potential fault line in a family’s foundation.
