The air in the house was a heavy, suffocating blanket, woven with threads of unspoken tension. Lily, small and fragile as a pressed flower, navigated its currents with the practiced caution of a sailor in treacherous waters. She had learned the language of the house, a dialect of subtle shifts and ominous silences. Her father, Mark, was the unpredictable weather system that dictated every aspect of their lives.

Today, the storm began with a stillness that was more terrifying than any roar. Mark sat at the kitchen table, his back to Lily as she attempted to butter a piece of toast. She ate her toast in tiny, silent bites, her eyes darting around the room, cataloging every detail. The way the sunlight fell through the window, casting long, distorted shadows that seemed to writhe and stretch. The dust motes dancing in the beams, oblivious to the suffocating atmosphere.
