Familiars and Fireworks
Amy embraces her unconventional magic and her beloved, noisy familiars. The village celebrates, and Amy's glitter spells, now seen as wondrous, light up the night.
My heart was still thumping like a hummingbird’s wings inside my chest, a frantic, joyful rhythm that matched the cheers echoing through the village square. The Spooky Moon, or what was left of its menacing glow, was shrinking, a pathetic bruised plum in the vast, inky sky, retreating like a bully caught with his hand in the cookie jar. And it was all thanks to… well, me. And my glitter. And, okay, fine, my ridiculous, yappy, absolutely wonderful chihuahuas.
Baby Blue Bears and Russo Baby Bears, their tiny bodies vibrating with an energy that seemed to defy their size, were currently doing victory laps around my ankles, their barks a high-pitched symphony of triumph. They’d been the first to truly understand the night blooms, their noses twitching with an uncanny wisdom as they nudged the glowing petals. And when I’d finally trusted that feeling, that knowing, and infused my wildest, most glitter-fueled spell with their magic and the bloom’s luminescence, it had been like setting off a thousand fireworks all at once. A glorious, rainbow explosion that had shoved the darkness right back where it belonged.
“Amy! Oh, Amy!” Mayor Mildred, her usually stern face crinkled into a delighted smile, bustled towards me, her arms laden with a basket overflowing with freshly baked moon-shaped cookies. “We don’t know how to thank you! You saved us all!”
