The air in my tiny cottage hummed with a nervous energy, a frantic buzz that matched the frantic thumping of my own heart. Outside, the Spooky Moon was a bruised, swollen thing in the sky, its sickly light seeping into every shadowed corner of our village, making even the cheerful sunflowers droop with gloom. It was the night before the Big Dark, and I was elbow-deep in a cauldron that smelled suspiciously like lavender and regret.

“More shimmer, Blue!” I yelped, tossing a handful of iridescent dust into the bubbling concoction. Baby Blue Bears, bless his tiny, yappy soul, nudged a small pouch of crushed moonstone towards me with his nose. He was surprisingly good at fetching when glitter was involved, which, let’s be honest, was most of the time. Russo Baby Bears, meanwhile, was doing his best impression of a furry, four-legged dust bunny, attempting to lick every stray sparkle that dared to escape my grasp.

“Honestly, you two,” I sighed, wiping a streak of glitter from my cheek. “This is serious. The Spooky Moon is going to suck all the light out of the world. Forever! And all you can think about is making yourselves sparkle like disco balls.”
