Chapter 7
The Crown of Crust
My pizzeria, 'Cheesy Does It,' became the undisputed king of crust. Word of my pizza spread like melted mozzarella. Even Judy, the smug owner of 'Judy's Janky Pies,' had to concede. She'd always scoffed at my methods, my obsession, but one taste of my creation, and her competitive spirit crumbled faster than a stale breadstick. She admitted defeat, a look of grudging respect replacing her usual sneer. The quest was complete. Eight years of dedication, of culinary chaos, had culminated in this: the world's greatest pizza. I was Georgie, the pizza maestro, and my reign, built on a foundation of perfect dough, sublime sauce, and heavenly cheese, had officially begun.
The air in "Cheesy Does It" was thick with the intoxicating aroma of baking dough, simmering tomatoes, and the unmistakable, triumphant scent of victory. It had been six months since I’d thrown open the doors, eight years since that first, ridiculously ambitious declaration to the world – or at least, to Kasey and my bewildered parents – that I, Georgie Draper, would forge the planet’s most magnificent pizza. And now, here I was, basking in the glow of a packed house, a chorus of satisfied sighs, and the ever-present hum of my glorious ovens. My ovens. *My* ovens. The ones that hadn’t, you know, spontaneously combusted.
My quest had been a glorious, messy, often terrifying odyssey. There were the years of dough that refused to rise, behaving more like a deflated balloon than a promising foundation. There were the sauce experiments that had Kasey blanching and muttering about chemical spills. And oh, the cheese. The cheese had a mind of its own, sometimes sliding off the pizza like a greased watermelon, other times forming a solidified, inedible shield that could stop a bullet. I’d once had a mozzarella that had achieved sentience, or at least, it seemed that way, as it oozed and stretched in ways that defied the laws of physics, clinging to the ceiling fan like a particularly tenacious spider. I’d even had a brief, ill-fated flirtation with a sourdough starter I’d affectionately named “Bubbles,” who, it turned out, was more interested in developing a robust colony of something that smelled suspiciously like gym socks than in contributing to pizza perfection.
Then there was the Inferno Incident. My pride and joy, a custom-built, brick-lined behemoth of an oven, had decided to go out with a bang. A fiery, smoky, utterly catastrophic bang that left me staring at a smoldering husk, my dreams reduced to ash and my eyebrows singed into oblivion. Kasey had found me sitting on the curb, a single, blackened anchovy clutched in my hand, weeping softly. She’d just patted my shoulder, a rare, gentle gesture, and said, “Well, at least you didn’t burn the curtains this time, Georgie.” It was her way of saying she still believed, even when I was questioning the very fabric of my cheesy existence.
