Chapter 2
The Unforeseen Downpour and the Vanishing Vest
In a bustling city square, Jackson, mid-sentence about the merits of a new brand of chewing gum, encounters Elise, a gypsy woman with piercing eyes. She politely asks for directions to the nearest public restroom. Jackson, seeing an audience, launches into an elaborate, multi-point explanation involving historical landmarks and hypothetical traffic patterns, lasting well over a minute. Elise, growing increasingly uncomfortable and desperate, tries to interrupt, but Jackson's verbal torrent continues. The inevitable happens, much to Elise's extreme embarrassment and Jackson's obliviousness. Furious and humiliated, Elise mutters an ancient incantation, imbuing Jackson with a peculiar curse: his clothes will vanish whenever he speaks for longer than sixty seconds. The scene ends with Jackson still talking, oblivious, as a faint shimmer begins around his collar.
The urban symphony of honking taxis and distant sirens was the usual soundtrack to Jackson's life, a constant hum that he, more often than not, drowned out with his own vocal stylings. Today, however, the symphony was about to welcome a bizarre new movement, a discordant note that would quite literally strip him bare. He was pontificating, as was his wont, to a slightly bewildered pigeon perched on a statue of a man whose name Jackson couldn't quite recall but was sure had something to do with important historical happenings. The topic du jour? The unparalleled tensile strength of a new brand of bubblegum, "Giga-Gum," which, Jackson argued with the fervor of a revival preacher, could achieve unprecedented spherical dimensions.
"…and the thing is, Mark, and this is crucial," Jackson continued, gesturing wildly with a piece of Giga-Gum, "it's not just about the pop, it's about the *potential* for the pop. You can chew it for, like, an hour, and it still has that… that *oomph*. It's science, really. Polymers, elasticity, the whole nine yards. I was reading this article, actually, on the biomechanics of mastication…"
He was so engrossed in his own narrative, so utterly consumed by the intricate workings of Giga-Gum and the fascinating world of oral biomechanics, that he didn't notice the woman approaching him. She was a figure of striking contrasts: a cascade of dark, unruly hair framing a face etched with a thousand stories, and eyes that held the sharp, knowing gleam of a hawk. Her clothes were a riot of colorful scarves and layered fabrics, the kind one might associate with a traveling troupe of performers, or perhaps, Jackson mused, a particularly adventurous librarian. She carried a worn, leather-bound bag that looked like it had seen more miles than his entire extended family.
The woman, Elise, stopped a respectable distance away, her gaze fixed on Jackson. She waited. And waited. And waited. Jackson, meanwhile, was hitting his stride, expounding on the complex chemical compounds that gave Giga-Gum its superior chewability. He was in his element, a verbal virtuoso, the conductor of his own one-man show.
Finally, Elise cleared her throat, a delicate sound that was utterly swallowed by Jackson's booming monologue. "Excuse me," she began, her voice a low murmur, like wind through dry leaves.
Jackson, however, was mid-sentence. "…and the way it stretches, you see, it's like taffy, but with a structural integrity that's frankly astonishing. I mean, have you ever tried to blow a bubble with those cheap brands? It's like trying to inflate a deflated balloon with a leaky pump. Utter futility. But Giga-Gum…"
Elise tried again, a little louder this time. "Sir? Could you possibly direct me to the nearest… establishment with a restroom?"
Jackson paused, not because he heard her, but because he’d momentarily run out of Giga-Gum-related anecdotes. He blinked at Elise, his eyes, usually so bright and engaged, now holding a vague, unfocused quality, as if she were merely a brief interruption in the grand tapestry of his internal monologue. "Restroom?" he echoed, as if the word itself were a foreign concept. Then, spotting a new audience member, his internal monologue switched to an external broadcast. "Oh, a restroom! You want to know about restrooms. Well, that's a fascinating question, really. You see, the urban planning of this particular district is rather fascinating. If you head down Elm Street, you'll see a rather impressive Victorian building – that's the old library, you know. They used to have a rather quaint restroom. But I'm not sure if that place is even still open. However..." Jackson Banks continued on and on, never giving Elise an answer to her simple question. Elise suffered an embarrassing moment. And it was all because of Jackson. Little did Jackson Banks know, a curse had just been placed upon him.
