Chapter 1
The Grand Overture of Jackson Banks
Jackson Banks is a human tornado of words, a man whose internal monologue spills out incessantly, drowning out all others. His friends, Mark and others, try to share anecdotes from their day, but Jackson's voice is a relentless flood, washing away their attempts. His girlfriend, Lisa, attempts to discuss her feelings or a significant event, only to be steamrolled by Jackson's own narratives. He's utterly unaware of the growing frustration and quiet despair of those around him. The scene opens with Jackson recounting a detailed, minute-by-minute account of his commute, completely ignoring Mark's attempts to interject about a promotion he received. Lisa sits nearby, a sigh escaping her lips as Jackson pivots to an extended monologue about his lunch.
Jackson Banks didn’t just talk; he detonated. Words were his personal fireworks, launched with reckless abandon, illuminating the sky for precisely zero seconds before fizzling out and leaving behind only the lingering smell of sulfur and the stunned silence of everyone else. He was a human avalanche of syllables, a verbal bulldozer that flattened any emerging conversation beneath its relentless momentum. Even in his sleep, according to his long-suffering girlfriend, Lisa, Jackson would mutter entire monologues, complete with sound effects and dramatic pauses that were, ironically, never quite long enough.
His friends, a collection of remarkably patient souls who had clearly signed a pact with the devil for the privilege of his acquaintance, had long since adopted a strategy of quiet resignation. Mark, a man whose quiet triumphs were usually celebrated with a polite nod before Jackson launched into a twenty-minute soliloquy about his own minor victory in parallel parking, was currently experiencing this phenomenon firsthand.
“So, you won’t believe it,” Mark began, his voice a hopeful chirp against the roaring engine of Jackson’s pre-existing narrative. “The boss called me in this morning, right after I got my coffee, and…”
Jackson’s head snapped up, his eyes, usually alight with the frantic glint of a man perpetually chasing his own thoughts, now focused with an almost predatory intensity on Mark. “Coffee! Oh, man, speaking of coffee, you know what happened to me this morning? It was insane. I swear, Mark, I was on the bus, right? And this guy, this *guy*, mind you, was wearing socks with sandals. Socks. With. Sandals. I kid you not. And it wasn’t even cold! I almost said something, but then I thought, you know, maybe he’s got a foot thing. Like, a medical condition. Or maybe he’s just a pioneer. You know? Pushing the boundaries of fashion. I mean, it’s bold. It’s a statement. I spent a solid ten minutes, Mark, ten minutes. Thinking about why sandals and socks!!" This was every day life for anyone who associated with Jackson Banks.
