The late afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across the town square, painting familiar cobblestones in hues of honey and rose. I sat on the edge of the fountain, its gentle murmur a counterpoint to the bustling sounds of people heading home, their steps purposeful, their faces set with the quiet certainty of knowing where they belonged. Marcus found me there, as he often did when I retreated to this quiet corner of our shared world. He sat beside me, his knees bumping mine, a comfortable, solid presence that usually soothed my restless spirit. Today, however, it felt different.

He tossed a small, smooth stone into the fountain, watching the ripples spread. "Still lost in thought, Elara?" he asked, his voice warm, laced with that familiar blend of affection and gentle concern. Marcus always saw my introspection as a temporary state, a phase I’d outgrow, like a childhood fear of the dark.

I offered a weak smile. "Just watching the water, Marcus. It seems to know where it's going."
