The library, usually a place of comforting quietude, felt different today. It was a sanctuary, yes, but also a frontier. I’d always stuck to the well-lit aisles, the familiar stories of brave knights and faraway lands. But lately, a different kind of curiosity had been gnawing at me, a hunger for the stories *between* the stories, the ones tucked away in the dusty corners. The librarian, Mrs. Gable, a woman whose smile was as gentle as falling snow, had always steered me towards the children’s section, her eyes twinkling with a well-meaning concern. Today, however, I felt a quiet resolve bloom within me.

“Mrs. Gable,” I began, my voice a little softer than I intended. “Could I… could I perhaps see some of the older books? The ones in the back?”

She paused, her hand hovering over a stack of returned picture books. Her brow furrowed slightly, a fleeting shadow crossing her kindly face. “Oh, Elara dear, those are quite… advanced. Not really for young readers.”
