The worn leather of the journal felt cool beneath my fingertips, a familiar comfort against the nervous tremor that ran through my hand. For so long, these pages had been the only place I dared to be truly myself, a silent confidante to the swirling chaos within. But the artist, with their fearless strokes and unapologetic colors, had planted a seed of something new – a fragile sprout of courage. The idea of letting another person see even a sliver of this hidden world, of this Elara who lived only on paper, felt like stepping off a cliff.

Marcus was waiting for me by the old oak tree, the one with the initials carved deep into its bark from generations of townspeople. He was kicking at a loose stone, his brow furrowed in that familiar way that meant he was worried about me. He always worried.

“There you are,” he said, his voice laced with relief. “I was starting to think you’d gotten lost again.”
