Chapter 9
The Recurring Nightmare
Sleep offers no escape. Her dreams are vivid, terrifying replays of fragmented events, culminating in the sharp pain in her nose. She wakes up gasping, the phantom injury throbbing.
The velvet cloak of night, usually a balm to Elara’s frayed nerves, offered no sanctuary. Sleep, when it finally claimed her, was a treacherous landscape, a churning sea of fragmented images and echoing whispers. She found herself adrift in a dreamscape that felt both intimately familiar and terrifyingly alien, a recurring nightmare that tightened its icy grip with each passing cycle of consciousness.
The dream began, as it always did, with a disorienting blur of motion. Flashes of intense light, the metallic tang of fear, the indistinguishable murmur of voices – a chaotic symphony of distress. Figures moved in the periphery, their faces obscured by shadow or the harsh glare. There was a sense of urgency, a frantic energy that pulsed through the dream’s fabric.
She, or a version of herself, was there, a silent observer trapped within the unfolding tableau. Her hands felt numb, her limbs heavy, as if wading through thick syrup. A single, piercing scream ripped through the air, a sound so raw, so full of anguish, that it vibrated in her very bones. It was her scream, she knew, even though the dream-Elara’s face was a mask of terror she couldn’t quite comprehend.
