The sterile scent of disinfectant clung to Detective Miles Corbin’s office, a stark contrast to the musty archives Elara had just left. She sat opposite him, the chipped Formica tabletop cool beneath her fingertips. He was a man carved from granite and patience, his gaze steady, almost unnervingly so. He’d listened, his pen scratching methodically across a notepad, to her disjointed narrative of shadowed figures, misplaced keys, and the persistent feeling of being a marionette. Now, the scratching had stopped, and the silence stretched, thick with unspoken judgment.

“So, Ms. Vance,” Corbin began, his voice a low rumble, devoid of any warmth, “you believe you’re being… observed?”

Elara’s nose throbbed, a dull ache that had become as familiar as her own heartbeat. She touched it gingerly, the skin still tender from a recent, inexplicable bump against a doorframe. “Not just observed, Detective. Manipulated. It’s like… like someone is rearranging the pieces of my life when I’m not looking.”
