Chapter 5
Shadows in the Archives
Digging through old records, Elara finds discrepancies in official accounts of a past event. Names are missing, dates are altered. A pattern emerges, but the details remain maddeningly out of reach.
The air in the municipal archives hung thick and still, a silent testament to countless forgotten days. Elara traced the spines of worn ledgers, each one a potential repository of answers, a whisper from a past she could almost, but not quite, grasp. Her nose throbbed with a dull ache, a familiar companion that seemed to pulse in sync with her growing unease. It was a phantom pain, she sometimes thought, a physical echo of the mental fog that clouded her memories.
She’d been coming here for days, a ghost haunting the hushed halls, sifting through the detritus of official histories. The event she was chasing, the one that felt like the linchpin of her fractured existence, was officially documented, of course. A minor industrial accident, a tragic but isolated incident. Inside, the official narrative unfolded with clinical detachment. A faulty valve, a sudden explosion, a handful of casualties. But as Elara scanned the list of names, a prickle of dread crawled up her spine. Two names, prominent in the early reports she’d managed to find online – a foreman, a safety inspector – were conspicuously absent from this official ledger. Not just absent, but entirely erased.
